MySQL Table Types
http://ubuntuland.nireblog.com/post/2008/08/01/mysql-table-t...
As of MySQL Version 3.23.6, you can choose between three basic table formats (ISAM, HEAP and MyISAM. Newer MySQL may support additional table type (InnoDB, or BDB), depending on how you compile it.
When you create a new table, you can tell MySQL which table type it should use for the table.

Browsers Internet for Linux
http://ubuntuland.nireblog.com/post/2008/01/09/browsers-inte...
There are many browsers available for Linux. I did not find a listing which I thought to be complete, especially considering non-Intel platforms. This list tries to accomplish this task. I tried to include all browsers for web pages (i.e. no pure 3D browsers) which are available for Linux. If a browser is missing or the information given is incorrect, I would be very glad if you could give me the information via email at ubuntulandnireblog@gmail.com

VeritasNetBackup: Restores from multiplexed database backups
http://ubuntuland.nireblog.com/post/2008/05/31/veritasnetbac...
NetBackup can run several restores at the same time from a single multiplexed tape. This is done by means of the
MPX_RESTORE_DELAY option, which specifies how long, in seconds, the server waits for additional restore requests of files or raw partitions that are in a set of multiplexed images on the same tape. The restore requests received within this
period are executed simultaneously. By default, the delay is 30 seconds.

Sitback is a backup daemon/utility for small/medium scale systems
http://ubuntulandforever.blogspot.com/2008/05/sitback-is-bac...
Sitback is actual just another tar/gzip interface. It evolved from a bash-script I wrote to handle automated backup's on Linux fileservers.
The script worked ok, but it soon proved difficult and tiresome to make local modifications to the script to handle various problems or differences.

Games for Linux
http://ubuntulandforever.blogspot.com/2008/05/games-for-linu...
About a week ago, Joe Barr posted a feature on Linux.com titled "New Alien Arena 6.10 blows away its FPS competition" yet gave no real comparisons with other similar games, regretable since his conclusion was that it "blows away its competition".
This was done in the same style as Barr's previous feature, "Tremulous: The best free software game ever?" which described Tremulous but also lacked comparisons and relations to other games. This feature hopes to be a thorough comparison of the major free software shooters.

Dvd rw tools makes it possible to burn DVD images created by dvdauthor or mkisofs
http://ubuntuland.nireblog.com/post/2008/04/16/dvdrw-tools-m...
Blu-ray Disc/ DVD+RW/+R/ -R[W] for Linux
dvd+rw-tools makes it possible to burn DVD images created by "dvdauthor" or "mkisofs" to DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R, and DVD-RW disks, replacing "cdrecord-proDVD" in many cases. The package contains "growisofs" to burn DVD images or create a data DVD on the fly, "dvd+rw-format" to format a DVD+RW, "dvd+rw-mediainfo" to give details about DVD disks, and some programs to control the write speed and obtain information from DVD-RAM.

Veritas NetBackup, Encryption, Java and Configuration Hardware
http://ubuntuland.nireblog.com/post/2008/04/18/veritas-netba...
When the NetBackup encryption option is enabled, your backups may run slower. How much slower depends on the throttle point in your backup path. If the network is the issue, encryption should not hinder performance. If the network is not the issue, then encryption may slow down the backup.
