Charities Find New Uses for Donated Vehicles

It’s become somewhat commonplace for charities to put all of their eggs in one very big basket. When they want to fund some of their bigger, more ambitious programs, they are turning first to their bread and butter. Just ask Goodwill Industries, which earlier this year announced one of their new programs. The idea behind the program is to help make families happier by moving them from poor housing situations into new homes. The idea in itself is quite noble, but it wouldn’t be worth much without the backing of the charity’s vehicle donation program.

Goodwill Industries of Northern Michigan started as Asgard Enterprises in 1972. In 1986, Asgard joined with Goodwill Industries International. From there, things really took off. Adapting the model used by other Goodwill Industries, donations of all types play a big role in helping the people of Northern Michigan.

Many people have decided to volunteer in various charities this month. This increase in interest has been stimulated by the awareness that so many people are struggling in this economic climate, and the fact that March is American Red Cross month. The Manitowoc/Calumet Chapter of The American Red Cross lists a number of volunteer opportunities on its website. Many similar opportunities are available through other Chapters. As a result, it is worthwhile describing some of those opportunities here.

Down Economy Having an Impact on Charities, Too

If you thought that only the for-profit companies were taking a hit with the down economy, think again. While it is pretty much common knowledge that people are cutting down on their frivolous and not so frivolous spending in light of the current financial landscape, it is less publicized that people are also doing less in the way of donations. In the past, charities like Goodwill Industries and The American Red Cross have leaned upon both small and large donations to do their work. Specifically, auto donations have paced their effort.

They currently serve southwestern Pennsylvania and north central West Virginia, helping people with jobs, clothes, cars and in other ways as well.
