Striping Across Four Storage Nodes With GlusterFS On Debian Lenny
26 / 4
http://www.howtoforge.com/striping-across-four-storage-nodes...
This tutorial shows how to do data striping (segmentation of logically sequential data, such as a single file, so that segments can be assigned to multiple physical devices in a round-robin fashion and thus written concurrently) across four single storage servers (running Debian Lenny) with GlusterFS. The client system (Debian Lenny as well) will be able to access the storage as if it was a local filesystem. GlusterFS is a clustered file-system capable of scaling to several peta-bytes. It aggregates various storage bricks over Infiniband RDMA or TCP/IP interconnect into one large parallel network file system. Storage bricks can be made of any commodity hardware such as x86-64 servers with SATA-II RAID and Infiniband HBA. Join discussion...

Installing VirtualBox 3.0 On An Ubuntu 9.04 Desktop
23 / 6
http://www.howtoforge.com/installing-virtualbox-3.0-on-an-ub...
This tutorial shows how you can install Sun VirtualBox 3.0 (released on June 30, 2009) on an Ubuntu 9.04 desktop. With VirtualBox you can create and run guest operating systems ("virtual machines") such as Linux and Windows under a host operating system. There are two ways of installing VirtualBox: from precompiled binaries that are available for some distributions and come under the PUEL license, and from the sources that are released under the GPL. This article will show how to set up VirtualBox 3.0 from the precompiled binaries. Join discussion...

Using iSCSI On Ubuntu 9.04 (Initiator And Target)
25 / 4
http://www.howtoforge.com/using-iscsi-on-ubuntu-9.04-initiat...
This guide explains how you can set up an iSCSI target and an iSCSI initiator (client), both running Ubuntu 9.04. The iSCSI protocol is a storage area network (SAN) protocol which allows iSCSI initiators to use storage devices on the (remote) iSCSI target using normal ethernet cabling. To the iSCSI initiator, the remote storage looks like a normal, locally-attached hard drive. Join discussion...

Squid Proxy Server On Ubuntu 9.04 Server With DansGuardian, ClamAV, And WPAD (Proxy Auto-Detection)
26 / 3
http://www.howtoforge.com/squid-proxy-server-on-ubuntu-9.04-...
This tutorial will demonstrate how to set up a Squid Proxy server on Ubuntu 9.04 Server with DansGuardian (for content filtering) and ClamAV (for Virus scanning); in addition, we will set up Web Proxy AutoDetection (WPAD) through DHCP (in this case, the Windows Server 2003 DHCP server) or DNS so that the only configuration necessary on the client side is to check "Auto-detect proxy settings for this network" in Firefox or Internet Explorer. At the end of the tutorial, users will have a fully functional and secure proxy for HTTP access. Join discussion...

Distributed Replicated Storage Across Four Storage Nodes With GlusterFS On Debian Lenny
27 / 2
http://www.howtoforge.com/distributed-replicated-storage-acr...
This tutorial shows how to combine four single storage servers (running Debian Lenny) to a distributed replicated storage with GlusterFS. Nodes 1 and 2 (replication1) as well as 3 and 4 (replication2) will mirror each other, and replication1 and replication2 will be combined to one larger storage server (distribution). Basically, this is RAID10 over network. If you lose one server from replication1 and one from replication2, the distributed volume continues to work. The client system (Debian Lenny as well) will be able to access the storage as if it was a local filesystem. GlusterFS is a clustered file-system capable of scaling to several peta-bytes. It aggregates various storage bricks over Infiniband RDMA or TCP/IP interconnect into one large parallel network file system. http://www.howtoforge.com/virtualization-with-xenserver-5.5....
This Howto covers the installation of XenServer 5.5.0 and the creation of virtual machines with the XenCenter administrator console. XenServer is a free virtualization platform from Citrix, the company behind the well known Xen virtualization engine. XenServer makes it easy to create, run and manage Xen virtual machines with the XenCenter administrator console. The XenServer installation CD contains a full Linux distribution which is customized to run XenServer. Join discussion...

http://www.howtoforge.com/enabling-compiz-fusion-on-a-fedora...
This tutorial shows how you can enable Compiz Fusion on a Fedora 11 GNOME desktop (the system must have a 3D-capable graphics card - I'm using an NVIDIA GeForce 8100 here). With Compiz Fusion you can use beautiful 3D effects like wobbly windows or a desktop cube on your desktop. Join discussion...

Virtualization With KVM On A Fedora 11 Server
26 / 3
http://www.howtoforge.com/virtualization-with-kvm-on-a-fedor...
This guide explains how you can install and use KVM for creating and running virtual machines on a Fedora 11 server. I will show how to create image-based virtual machines and also virtual machines that use a logical volume (LVM). KVM is short for Kernel-based Virtual Machine and makes use of hardware virtualization, i.e., you need a CPU that supports hardware virtualization, e.g. Intel VT or AMD-V. Join discussion...
