Study: Alcohol, tobacco worse than drugs (10 comments, +77 / -12 votes )
Avg: Agree
#1 Yet, a smoker can smoke and drive quite safely, however the same cannot be said about someone who just had a couple of joints or ectasy.

And yes, I know some people who've been smoking pot all their lives can arguably have a joint and still drive safely, but still, can you say they can drive more clearly than someone who just had a cigarrette?

BTW I'm not defending nor attacking any substance in particular - just pointing what seem to be simple facts. I won't argue that a 1 packaday tobacco smoker may be harming his health (and others) more than someone who has 3-8 joints a day, but I don't think the study is considering all facts. Also, I believe that if alcohol is the cause of 1/2 of visits to the ER it has a lot to do with the fact that you can legally buy and consume alcohol almost anywhere.

So I'm not sure what conclusion should one get out of this. That we should ban tobacco? Legalize ectasy? The thing is, none of this stuff is good for your health.

#1 Guy and I have met many times. He's a smart guy, but, whithout getting into details, he doesn't always do what he preaches. And the truth is, that's also because he's a smart fellow :-)

Some Good Words To coRank (6 comments, +26 / -4 votes )

#5 Great suggestions. I've taken note of all of them and some will likely be implemented.

I don't particularly like having the site to decide for you whether one of your sources is is a good or a bad one (even if it's optional), but there should be easy ways for you to determine that. Right now, the closest thing is the like-minded page, but that only tells you about good matches, not about a source that is disagreeing with you, so there's definitely room for improvement there.

#1 Not directly related, but I find it funny when I see screenshots of an OS with a big clock/calendar right there eating up desktop space. Seriously, is that something so essential? For me the ideal clock is right at the very bottom (or top), small an unobstrusive :-)

#9 The "edit your comment" will come in a few weeks (timed, so you cannot come today and edit something you said yesterday). It's in the to-do list.

As for the average, since there are 5 variables now, I think it's a bit too heavy to show 5 numbers, that's why I opted for making it clickable, then after you click, you see how the rating went for all 5 options. But perhaps it's not a bad idea to show at least the # for the "winning" rating.

#2 It's nice to read that kind of things, especially considering coRank is only about 2 weeks old, but since we're on the subject of "I'm getting visits from coRank", why not linking to the original source instead of linking to Wikio? (or any other site that simply redirects traffic to another source?)

Fonts used in some Web 2.0 logos (2 comments, +14 / -1 votes )

#1 BTW, coRank is not on that list (how could it, we didn't exist when the list was written) but in case anyone cares, it uses two fonts (usually a big no-no): Trebuchet MS for the "Rank" part and a basic Courier for the "co" part. The "beta" thing is nothing but good old Arial.

Oh, and the 3 arches inside the blue circle are actually three rotated parenthesis using the Chick font. Now, that one would have been hard to guess :-)

#1 We're cool. Definitely it's not going to be a "let's see if we build it and they come" thing. For the next week or two it's probably going to be a bit slow, but after that, there's a bunch of things we're going to start doing, one after another. I think it's going to be really fun! You'll see :-)

#12 Yes, during the closed beta there was a member very vocal about getting rid of the "down" vote, but I found - and still find - very useful to also gather and apply that information, and that's why it did stay. And it is going to stay.

For now, the +/- labels have been changed to "Interesting" and "Not for me", but I agree some work will need to be done to make it more obvious, not only to the people who vote but for the people who submit stories.

I also think that it "helps" the fact that the site is still learning how to walk and still has a small number of users. If I today send a story and it gets 1 + and 3 -, I may feel like "well, if only one person found interesting what I submitted, why bother?". That feeling might change if I had got 100 + and 300 -, because even 300 people said they didn't care, at least I know 100 people benefitted from it.
