#1 I'll tell you one reason Steve doesn't mention: sell while the buzz is high, because you don't know whether the current momentum will continue to build up or it will fade down... What I question is - who would really want to buy it? The tech behind it is quite simple, and the user base isn't that impressive (short of 100k). We'll see...

Photo Digg can be easily gamed (1 comment, +24 / -3 votes )

#1 Any voting system that does not require an account can be easily gamed. They check your IP? Obtain a new one from your ISP? They leave a cookie? Delete the old one... And of course, if they require a new account, like Digg or coRank, well, just go ahead an create as many accounts as you need.

However, and because none of this can be easily automated, you must REALLY want to go for it, and spend precious time "gaming" the system. In the end, one hour of "work" could give you a dozen votes or so. Worth the time? Probably not.

Also keep in mind that sites like Digg or Pligg have the bury feature - that you cannot control - and in sites like coRank, if you create 20 accounts and use them all to give a positive vote to a story, that doesn't guarantee that other people will see your story, since those 20 accounts will likely not be a source for any other coRank users.

#1 msgbeepa, you're a great coRank user, but all your submissions are to wikio, then redirected to your blog. I am not going to make a rule that says you shouldn't do this, at least not now, but there's a fine line between right and wrong here.

Please do continue submitting quality content, but if you say "this great site..." then link to "that site", don't bridge through Wikio, then your blog, then the site. If your blog has something interesting to say about the site, link to your blog, otherwise link to the source. As the site grows my guess is that we'll do our best to avoid this practice in the interest of all coRank users. What do you think?

#1 That wouldn't work here. Try submitting something from www.pornotube.com :-)

Oh, and if you find a workaround (other than using a redirect URL), let me know :-))

#1 IMO the woman is clearly innocent. Just a clueless prosecutor and jury. The woman lost her unborn child because of this and nobody's listening. Sad.

#1 Why linking to Wikio instead of linking to the actual source?

Right now, when we click on the story, the source receives a referral from Wikio, not coRank. There's nothing wrong with that but by linking directly to the source, they know that coRank is sending them some traffic, not Wikio. And that's good for coRank :-)

3monkeys ยป Where Is Digg Support? (3 comments, +27 / -3 votes )
Avg: Agree
#1 I wasn't sure I wanted to vote this one up. Not because I don't think it's interesting but because I'm not into talking dirty about competitors (yes, although from a different galaxy and at a very different level, I do see Digg as a site in the same space as coRank), but I'm actually a regular reader of 3monkeys (you should check their article before this one - long as a book) and it's this kind of things what led me to start writing coRank, and if only for that reason, I think it may be worth reading, so there goes my vote.

Regarding whether I think something like that could happen to coRank in the future, I think the main thing we probably need to worry here at coRank is to keep the incoming stories with some level of quality. In other words, trying to keep the trash and spam out.

But I don't see how a bury brigade could develop here, and even if it did, how could it affect my front page for instance? If a story gets 5 positive votes from my sources, and 200 negative votes all from people who are not my sources, the story is still going to make it to my front page, so the only thing a "bury brigade" could affect would be the "All Sources" page, but precisely because the emphasis is on each person's front page, even if coRank was riding amazing success, these bury attempts wouldn't really affect the usefulness of the site at a persona level I think.

Oracle sues SAP for website espionage (4 comments, +32 / -2 votes )

#3 Well I don't n know either, but SAP is not "returning calls" and if a company is accused of espionage I would suspect it would do whatever in its power to disregard the accusations. Of course I do expect SAP will eventually deny the allegations but I also don't think Oracle would make these claims and sue just because it feels like it. We'll see...
