VeritasNetBackup: Restores from multiplexed database backups
http://ubuntuland.nireblog.com/post/2008/05/31/veritasnetbac...
NetBackup can run several restores at the same time from a single multiplexed tape. This is done by means of the
MPX_RESTORE_DELAY option, which specifies how long, in seconds, the server waits for additional restore requests of files or raw partitions that are in a set of multiplexed images on the same tape. The restore requests received within this
period are executed simultaneously. By default, the delay is 30 seconds.

Sitback is a backup daemon/utility for small/medium scale systems
http://ubuntulandforever.blogspot.com/2008/05/sitback-is-bac...
Sitback is actual just another tar/gzip interface. It evolved from a bash-script I wrote to handle automated backup's on Linux fileservers.
The script worked ok, but it soon proved difficult and tiresome to make local modifications to the script to handle various problems or differences.

Games for Linux
http://ubuntulandforever.blogspot.com/2008/05/games-for-linu...
About a week ago, Joe Barr posted a feature on Linux.com titled "New Alien Arena 6.10 blows away its FPS competition" yet gave no real comparisons with other similar games, regretable since his conclusion was that it "blows away its competition".
This was done in the same style as Barr's previous feature, "Tremulous: The best free software game ever?" which described Tremulous but also lacked comparisons and relations to other games. This feature hopes to be a thorough comparison of the major free software shooters.

Basic MySQL User Utility Commands

Better yet, as everybody's working on dynamic web pages today, our nice database server is very quick at estabilishing a connection. If you have already tried a CGI script connecting to Oracle, DB2 or some other powerhouse database you know how the connection time can slow down your web site.
As with any modern tool, you can write C programs to get your data from, but it's easier to write a REXX script or a Java applet. It even comes ready with an easy to use web gateway. Add to this wide multi-platform coverage and we have a perfect match to our desires.

http://ubuntuland.nireblog.com/post/2008/05/05/ubuntus-openg...
GDM (the GNOME Display Manager) provides an alternative display manager for the X Window System.
The X Window System by default uses the XDM display manager. However, resolving XDM configuration issues typically involves editing a configuration file. GDM allows users to customize or troubleshoot settings without having to resort to a command line. Users can pick their session type on a per-login basis. GDM also features easy customisation with themes.

Dump restore utilities for Linux backup
http://ubuntuland.nireblog.com/post/2007/12/29/dump-restore-...
Dump examines files in a filesystem, determines which ones need to be backed up, and copies those files to a specified disk, tape or other storage medium.
Subsequent incremental backups can then be layered on top of the full backup.
