A new edition of one the most popular English-language Bibles will offer substitutes for words such as "booty" and "holocaust" to better reflect modern understanding, a Catholic group said on Wednesday.Nearly 50 scholars from all faiths and a committee of Roman Catholic bishops have labored since 1994 over the first fresh edition of the New American Bible since 1970, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops said.

Religion has often been the root cause for violent acts. Focusing on the interpretation of moral claims about good and evil, religion encompasses tradition, history, and faith and as such it reflects the social construct of a culture that views a particular religion as indisputably true. Extreme religious commitment is often expressed in the form of extremist behavior and terrorism as religious beliefs are mainly based on faith rather than reason. In this context, the higher objective truth echoed by religion may require confrontational solutions when put at stake.

And it went even further.
The question, however, remains:
Should religion have a say in the public conduct of people?

The idea behind this supposed conflict is that "God" serves as a kind of default causal mechanism invoked to explain anything not yet understood scientifically. Thus, if current science has no explanation for the existence of living creatures, then that is seen -- superstitiously, according to one camp, or faithfully, according to the other -- as evidence that there is still "room" for God in our world view. And, if scientific advances should conquer that problem, then it is hoped or feared that the territory plausibly claimed by religion will be reduced by just the area now newly occupied by science.
