A chemical element that is considered rare transition metal, very hard and brittle. It is silver gray in color and one of the platinum metals from group eight of the periodic table of element together with rhodium, palladium, osmium, iridium, and platinum. It is used as hardener in alloys of platinum and palladium that even only small amounts of it can increase the hardness of platinum and palladium. Going back to my school days in college, who could forget the periodic table of elements which we were obliged to memorize just to pass eight units of Chemistry. There is no chemistry textbook, classroom or laboratory that does not have a copy of the periodic table. During our days, we have 109 known elements but nowadays, there are 118.
