What is an atom?
http://www.helium.com/items/1351260-what-is-an-atom
Ancient Greece is known to be the birthplace of atom. It was when Democritus, a natural philosopher who proclaimed that matter was composed of indestructible particles called atom. He first described these particles using the Greek word "atomos" which means uncuttable or the smallest indivisible particle of matter, something that cannot be divided. Democritus even extrapolated that matter was composed of these tiny particles that formed the mass of the substances. It was a radical idea at that time but when John Dalton proposed his modern atomic theory of matter in 1803, the idea was revived. Read details at http://www.helium.com/items/1351260

New state of matter discovered? "like noodles in a soup"
http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2007-03/ns-hrf031407....
There may be a different way of thinking about matter. New theory suggests electrons are not really elementary particles, but are formed at the ends of long "strings" of other, fundamental particles? Scientists have a model in which such strings are free to move "like noodles in a soup" and weave together into huge "string-nets". "Suddenly we realised, maybe the vacuum of our whole universe is a string-net liquid," says one. New experiments by other scientists may have proved them right.
