Commercials for beer, soda, cars, movies, and even more intangible things like computer services and insurance especially overwhelm us on this special day. It's a glorious bounty of consumerist joy. And, oh yeah, the ads are interspersed with a major football game called the Super Bowl. The Super Bowl is a major tradition even for people who couldn't care less about sports, and it's one of the few days out of the year when advertising companies try to hold themselves to a slightly higher standard of humor and creativity. The best ads are the ones that get talked about for days, months, or even years, long after people stop caring about celebrity wardrobe malfunctions. They're the ones that actually approach art.
