It was when Democritus, a natural philosopher who proclaimed that matter was composed of indestructible particles called atom. He first described these particles using the Greek word "atomos" which means uncuttable or the smallest indivisible particle of matter, something that cannot be divided. Democritus even extrapolated that matter was composed of these tiny particles that formed the mass of the substances. It was a radical idea at that time but when John Dalton proposed his modern atomic theory of matter in 1803, the idea was revived. Read details at http://www.helium.com/items/1351260
