TRAPS: One reason interviewers ask this question is to see if you’re settling for this position, using it merely as a stopover until something better comes along. Or they could be trying to gauge your level of ambition. If you’re too specific, i.e., naming the promotions you someday hope to win, you’ll sound presumptuous. If you’re too vague, you’ll seem rudderless. BEST ANSWER: Reassure your interviewer that you’re looking to make a long-term commitment

When it's your turn to ask questions, you should also always ask the person interviewing you where does he/she sees the team 5 years from now, as well as how critical is the role of the team within the company.

That, more than anything else, shows that you're looking for a long term position and don't want to end up in a team with an uncertain future within the company. You'll be surprised how few interviewers are actually expecting you to ask that :-)

That's true RBA. But at times you maynot want to annoy your possible employer with the wrong questions;)

What's your take on this?

If your new employer can be annoyed by a question like that, then they aren't going to be good to work for.

I see :)

But that may not be a choice always :(

My take is that the person being interviewed should always ask questions, and that this one (where do you see this team moving forward) is an excellent one. I don't think the employer should be annoyed. Usually if they're hiring for a particular department it means that department is "moving up" and they should be happy to respond. It shows you care, as opposed to the typical "do you like working here?" - what do you think the answer would be for that one? Of course they'll say they like it! :-)

Sure RBA, I agree with every word of your comment.
Maybe the next blog post will focuss on this.
