I do not agry...I think it is just the fact that we are stepping into a new millenium makes people feel lie the end of the world, plus the rapid sociological, economic and generally global changes had a lot of people caught in the middle, a lot of people are not used to changes and so they interpret facts like the end of the world. Human race is considered to be the most accomodating creatures on this planet and we have always found ways to survive. We have survived horrors that are much more bigger than hurricanes( of course the fact that the global warming is on its active stroll is practically undeniable, but we can adapt to that): WW2,the great depression, plagues roaming the Europe in the 15-17 centuries, people also thought that was the end of the world. The best thing we can do, is try to find a nharmony between the progress, our planet and people as individuals, so that none of that got stomped by anything and found a perfect balance....
