What do Vista, Flash, RealPlayer, and iTunes have in common? According to Media Rights Technologies (MRT), all of them are infringing products under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, and MRT has just sent cease-and-desist letters to Microsoft, Adobe, Real, and Apple.

MPAA Math: 40% Plus 70% Equals?

MPAA continues to invent new math. It adds up the 70% (of camcorded movies) coming from Canada with the 40% coming from New York City (not to mention % from the rest of the world) and still come up with 100%. Considering they can't back up earlier reports claiming 30%, 40% and 50% from Canada, don't expect them to explain the 70% either.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) has begun fighting back this week against one DMCA takedown abuser. The organization has filed a lawsuit against "paranormalist" Uri Geller for sending a takedown notice to YouTube over a video that heavily criticizes his psychic and magical abilities. US: New bill to give bloggers same shield law protection as journalists

A proposal to extend the "Free Flow of Information Act of 2007" to give bloggers the same protection as journalists. Introduced last week (first week of May 2007) by Representative Rick Boucher (D-VA), the bill is meant to offer a federal version of reporter "shield" laws that are in place in some 32 states in the US.

US FCC: FCC warns carriers to stop blocking free conference calls

The Federal Communications Commission has told large telcos and carriers to stop blocking calls to conference calling services routed through Iowa. FCC Chairman Kevin Martin said after a public appearance yesterday that the Commission told the big telcos that if they do not stop blocking the calls, the FCC "would end up taking action as we saw necessary," according to GigaOm.
